West Ham United 6 Brighton and Hove Albion 0

Before Saturday’s clash against West Ham United, Brighton manager Gus Poyet said that he would learn a lot from his side’s reaction to playing at Upton Park. Unfortunately he won’t like what he saw, as his side succumbed to a heavy 6-0 defeat which means that their play-off ambitions have taken a serious knock.

Ricardo Vaz Te hit a hat-trick and other goals from Carlton Cole and Kevin Nolan made the score 5-0 before Gary Dicker scored an own goal to make it 6-0. This defeat leaves Brighton five points outside the play-offs with three games to go, but it has meant that West Ham are only four points behind Southampton in their chase for an automatic promotion spot.

Vaz Te struck the opener in the third minute and then moments later he headed in his second. A tap-in for Kevin Nolan then ended a dreadful 11 minute spell for the Seagulls as they were 3-0 down with a mountain to climb if they wanted to salvage anything from the game.

On the half an hour mark Brighton had a decent chance to pull a goal back, but Inigo Calderon sliced his effort wide after a decent corner by Vicente. Gordon Greer then came close himself to scoring but Robert Green clawed his header out of the top corner after another good corner, this time from Gary Dicker.

Brighton’s passing was unusually sloppy on the day and they relinquished possession far too often which only made things more difficult for them. West Ham on the other hand were the complete opposite as they played with creativity and guile and looked extremely confident in attack.

In the second half an acrobatic overhead kick from Vaz Te completed his hat-trick before Cole’s effort deflected off his teammate Henri Lansbury to add to the Hammers’ lead. Brighton’s misery was then compounded when Dicker scored an own goal from Mark Noble corner to end the game 6-0.
