Caroline Lucas calls for major housing improvement programme

Green Party leader Caroline Lucas has called for an ambitious energy efficiency improvement programme to be phased in to encourage affordable heated homes for everyone.

Speaking at an event in Brighton, the Brighton Pavilion MP, used the plight of tenants in her constituency who are suffering as a result of poor energy efficiency.

Mrs Lucas told the Chatered Institute of Housing South East Conference of her doubts over the government’s Green Deal: “What we need is a massive investment in green infrastructure….Only by thinking big can we tackle these issues.”

She also highlighted the lack of foresight in the private rental sector towards energy efficiency, calling it a “social and environmental scandal that anyone is living in these conditions”.
