Amex Stadium curry competition heating up for Brighton & Hove chefsChefs in Brighton & Hove are looking to spice things up next week as they step up to the plate for the annual Curry Chef of the Year Competition final.

Chefs from restaurants and takeaways in Brighton & Hove will be cooking up a storm at Brighton’s Amex Stadium on Wednesday 31st August 2011.

Restaurants taking part include Indian Summer of East Street, Brighton, The Chilli Pickle of Jubilee Street Brighton, Rasa Brighton, Sabai of Princes Place, Brighton, Ganges Brasserie of Church Road Hove and Kamal Indian Take-away of Upper Hamilton Road, Brighton.

Councillor, Pete West, Brighton & Hove City Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “The competition is designed to get across the importance of good food hygiene and healthy eating in a fun and different way.

“It is also about highlighting the choice of places we have in the city producing great food, from takeaways to restaurants.”

The competition is being organised by Brighton & Hove City Council’s food safety team as part of its ongoing work with local catering businesses.

The chefs will be preparing and cooking their curries in the kitchens at the new home of Brighton & Hove Albion, the American Express Community stadium. A panel of judges, including food writer Andrew Kay, Councillor Ollie Sykes and Fred Tobin, Executive Chef for Azure (catering company at the Amex), will then mark the dishes, taking into account everything from flavour and aroma to nutritional content and culinary skills.

The council runs a popular ‘Scores on the Doors’ scheme which lists food hygiene ratings for all food outlets in the city. Indian and Thai restaurants and takeaways with three or more ‘stars’ on the Scores on the Doors ratings scheme were invited to take part in the events, and checks have been carried out on their food safety and hygiene measures in the run-up to the competition.
