Aung San Suu Kyi, Honorary Freewoman of Brighton and Hove, congratulated by Council LeaderAung San Suu Kyi, Nobel Laureate and Honorary Freewoman of Brighton and Hove, has been warmly congratulated by Brighton and Hove City Council Leader Bill Randall after her historic victory in the Burmese Parliament elections.

The National League for Democracy (NLD), Aung San Suu Kyi’s opposition party, claimed 43 of 44 seats in Sunday’s by-election in Burma (1 April 2012).

This election was the first the NLD has taken part in since 1990 and is being seein as a test of political reform in the country.

Bill Randall said: “This is an important victory for the sixty million people of Burma and provides real hope for the future. It is rightly being hailed as the beginning of a new era in Burmese politics”.

Aung San Suu Kyi was the guest director of the Brighton Festival 2011 and was made an Honorary Freewoman of Brighton and Hove in recognition of her continuing efforts to support the people of Burma and the many people throughout the world striving to attain democracy, human rights and ethnic conciliation by peaceful means.
